Relative Truth
By: Dalton Gilreath

In 1963 around 65% of the religious world believed the Bible could be taken literally. However, today studies show that only 30% believe the Bible contains any moral absolutes. Unfortunately, the world is becoming more comfortable with this mindset that truth is relative. This attitude is very dangerous as more individuals are making difficult decisions through their own standard of truth instead of God’s. Marriage has lost its sanctity, respect is thrown out the window, and worship is no more significant than a holiday practiced on special occasions. Today Christianity is faced with the same question Pilate asked our Lord nearly two thousand years ago. That question is, “What is truth?” (John 18:38 KJV).

The Bible was written to give us assurance of the truth and nothing less. Luke wrote about “things which are most surely believed among us” (Luke 1:1). Those who belong to Christ can be certain of this truth because it came from an absolute God (2 Tim 3:16-17). One might ask why Christians are simply ignoring these passages. Sadly, people are wanting to and therefore choosing to live their lives by their own standard. Believing in absolute truth means being married to one spouse, attending services every week, and giving money and time to others. That doesn’t sound nearly as fun as having multiple partners, constantly being entertained, and being rich to many people, does it? That is exactly what Satan uses to deceive these people. However, Christians understand that true joy comes from the absolute truth found in the word of God (Psalm 1:2). Paul told Timothy, “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them” (2 Tim 3:13-14). All Christendom would do well to remember these words.
