WATER

Another Proof that God Exists

Victor M. Eskew

Water is defined as:  “a transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid, a compound of hydrogen and oxygen” (www.dictionary.com).  The definition of water lends itself to the synonym we often use for water, H2O.  Except in the desert regions of the world, water is everywhere.  It is under the earth.  It is on the earth.  It is above the earth.  It exists in three forms:  liquid, solid, and gas.  This liquid is extremely precious.  No living thing can survive without it.

Most of us know a few things about water, but we have not seriously contemplated this unique resource.  Let’s look at some interesting facts about water.  First, plants, animals, and human beings consist mostly of water.  Water accounts for about 70% of every human being.  This percentage changes as we progress through the life cycle.  “A human fetus constitutes around 95% water for the first months, getting to 77% water at birth and 60-70% water in adults” (https://ohfact.com/interesting-facts-about-water/).  This is difficult to image because most of our bodies are not in liquid form.  Here is a brief breakdown of the water found in our bodies:  “…the bones are watery and contain 31% water. The skin is 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79% water and guess what 70% of the human brain is also water. Two-thirds of entire water in our body is within our cells” (Ibid.).

Second, water is perfectly suited for life.*  It has a wide margin between its boiling point (212 degrees) and its freezing point (32 degrees).  This allows humans to live in environments of fluctuating temperature changes, while keeping our bodies a steady 98.6 degrees.  Water is also chemically neutral.  It can carry many substances through our bodies such as food, medicines, and chemicals without impacting them in any way.  Closely connected to the previous point, water is a universal solvent.  It dissolves chemicals, minerals, and nutrients so they can be carried throughout our bodies, even within the smallest blood vessels.  Water also has a unique surface tension.  It can flow upward against gravity.  This is especially important in plants.  Life-giving water can flow to the top of the tallest trees on the earth.

Third, 97% of the Earth’s water is in the oceans.  If you have been in ocean water, you know how salty that water is.  There is a system on the Earth which does two things.  One, it removes the salt from the water.  Two, it distributes water from the oceans to places all over the land.  This system is called the Hydrological Cycle.  Water evaporates from the oceans, leaving the salt behind.  Clouds are formed that are carried by the wind to disperse the water over the land for vegetation, animals, and people.  This is an endless cycle.

The question is:  “Where did water come from?”  Scientists who do not believe in God tell us that all the water on Earth arrived during a period called the Late Heavy Bombardment between 4.5 billion and 3.8 billion years ago in comets and asteroids.  First, this is simply hypothetical.  Second, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions like:  “Where did the comets and asteroids obtain the water that they brought to earth?”

A more simple explanation is that God who created all things is the being responsible for all of the water and its distribution on the earth.  On Day 1, God created a watery mass.  “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.  And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.  And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” (Gen. 1:1-2).  On Day 2, God separated some of the water and moved it over the earth.  “And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.  And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament:  and it was so.  And God called the firmament Heaven.  And the evening and the morning were the second day” (Gen. 1:6-8).  The waters above the earth were like a canopy that encircled the earth.  They helped to keep the earth at a warm, constant temperature.  (NOTE:  When the flood of Noah’s day occurred, this canopy collapsed and the climate of the earth radically changed, see Gen. 7:11).  On Day 3, He separated the water that remained on the earth from the land.  “And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together in one place, and let the dry land appear:  and it was so.  And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas:  and God saw that it was good” (Gen. 1:9-10).  On Day 3, God also created the plants that were composed of much water.  On Day 5, He created the fish and fowl that were composed of much water.  And, on Day 6, He created man who was also composed of dust (Gen. 2:7) and a lot of water.  God designed every system composed of water.  He designed an earth filled with water to meet the needs of every living thing.  It was no accident.  It was an intelligent being who composed everything to exact specifications.

Which is easier for you to believe?  That priceless water just happened to make it to earth, arriving by comets and asteroids billions of years ago?  Or, that valuable water was created by God in order to care for all living things that He created and placed upon the earth?  One is an accident.  One is by design.  The more a person studies that transparent, odorless, and tasteless liquid called “water,” the more he is convinced that there is a God in Heaven!
