DEALING WITH SIN (2)

Hebrews 10:12b-18

Victor M. Eskew

INTRODUCTION

A.    The cause of all this discussion is sin.

B.      Hebrews 10 has a lot to say about sin.

1.      We have entitled this chapter:  “Dealing with Sin.”

2.      Keep in mind that the writer is dealing with Jewish believers returning to Judaism.  There- fore, he continues to make contrasts between the system of Judaism and the system of Christianity.

C.     In this chapter, the writer will end the doctrinal details of his discussion (See vs 18-19, 22-24) and begin to make some very practical admonitions to his readers.

D.    Outline:

i.                    SINS REMAINED (Heb. 10:1-4)  Remembrance of sins

ii.                  SINS ARE REMITTED (Heb. 10:5-14)  Remittance from sins

iii.                SINS REMEMBERED NO MORE (Heb. 10:15-18)  Remembered no more sins

iv.                NO SINS BRING RESPONSIBILITY (Heb. 10:19-25)  Responsibility after sins

v.                  SINS ARE RECOMPENSED (Heb. 10:26-31)  Recompense for sins

vi.                SIN:  NO RETURN (Heb. 10:32-39)  Resolution against sin

I.                   SINS REMAINED (Heb. 10:1-4)

II.                SINS ARE REMITTED (Heb. 10:5-14)

A.    Sanctified (Heb. 10:5-10)

B.      Perfected (Heb. 10:11-14)

1.      Sacrifices of the priests (Heb. 10:11)

2.      Sacrifice of Christ (Heb. 10:12-14)

a.      A single sacrifice (Heb. 10:12a)

b.      The Son seated (Heb. 10:12b-13)

…sat down on the right hand of God; from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

1)      Jesus is reigning.

a)      Jesus can be seated at the right hand of God because He has done His work in offering His sacrifice.

b)      To be seated on God’s right hand indicates the authority He presently has over His kingdom.

c)      Paul says that Jesus will reign till all enemies are put under his feet (I Cor. 15:25).

2)      Thus, He is also waiting or “expecting” the day when He shall subdue all enemies (See Ps. 110:1)

The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

a)      Satan

b)      Satan’s angels

c)      Workers of iniquity

d)     False religious systems

e)      Death

3)      Death will be the very last enemy destroyed (I Cor. 15:26).

a)      This will happen at the resurrection of the dead.

b)      At that time, all will be put under His feet.  His enemies will be made his footstool.

4)      At this time, He will deliver the kingdom back to the Father (I Cor. 15:24).

Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

c.       The Sacrifice Sufficient (Heb. 10:14)

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

1)      The writer emphasizes again the “one offering” as opposed to the thousands and thousands under the Law.

2)      This offering “hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

a)      Perfected

a)       Strong (5048):  complete, accomplish, consummate

b)      Thayer:  to make perfect, complete, to carry through completely, finish, bring to an end

b)      Once Jesus forgives a person’s sins, they are forever removed from the individual.  They are not remembered year after year.  The forgiveness is complete.

3)      Argument:  Some say that since the sanctified are perfected “for ever” they will always be saved.  Answer:

a)      Past sins are completely totally forgiven forever and ever.

b)      A Christian, however, can sin after becoming a Christian.  When he does, for those sins to be forgiven forever, he must repent (Acts 8:22), confess his sins (I John 1:9), and pray for God’s forgiveness (Acts 8:22).  When he does, these sins are like the sins committed before becoming a child of God.  They are totally removed forever.

c)      If he does not repent, he can fall from grace (See Gal. 5:4).

Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
