2.       Who sent David to check on his brethren who were encamped with Saul? (I Sam. 17:17)

B.      As a father, he was deeply concerned about his children.

As a citizen of Israel, he was concerned about the outcome of the battle.

3.       What two things were given to David to give to his brothers? (I Sam. 17:17)

A.      Parched corn                                                       B.  Ten loaves

4.       What did Jesse send to the captain of their thousand? (I Sam. 17:18)

And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand…

A.     He carried ten cheeses.

B.      The armies of Israel were divided into various numbers.  Jesse wanted to show his respect to his sons’ commander.  He did this by giving him a gift of cheese.

5.       “…and look how thy brethren fare and take their pledge.” (I Sam. 17:18)

6.       What did Jesse mean when he said:  “…and take their pledge”? (I Sam. 17:18)

A.     Pledge

1.       Strong (6161):  something given as security, a token of safety

2.       BDB:  pledge, token, bond, surety, thing exchanged

B.      David was to take something back with him that would reassure his father that his sons were doing okay.

1.       It could have been a simple word from each of them.

2.       He might have returned with a possession from each of them that would prove to Jesse they were okay.

7.       In what valley did Israel fight against the Philistines? (I Sam. 17:19)

Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

A.     The valley of Elah

8.       At what time of day did David leave to go to his brothers? (I Sam. 17:20)

Now David rose up early in the morning…

A.     Early in the morning

B.      The distance from Bethlehem to the valley of Elah was about 84 miles.

9.       With whom did he leave the sheep? (I Sam. 17:20)

…and left the sheep with a keeper…

A.     With a keeper

B.      This may have been a servant trained to shepherd the flock.  It might have also been a hireling.

10.   What was happening as David arrived at the trench? (I Sam. 17:20)

…and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to fight, and shouted for the battle.

A.     He arrived just as Goliath came out and shouted his challenge to the nation of Israel.

B.      NOTE:  The word “trench” indicates a wagon-rampart.  It was the place where the armies of Israel had assembled their wagons and circled them for the battle.

11.   “For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army” (I Sam. 17:21).

12.   With whom did David leave his carriage? (I Sam. 17:22)

13.   Who came up as David spoke with his brethren? (I Sam. 17:23)

And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines…

A.     Goliath

14.   T – F    David did not hear the things that Goliath said to Israel. (I Sam. 17:23)

…and spake according to the same words:  and David hear them.

A.     False

15.   What two things did the men of Israel do when they saw Goliath? (I Sam. 17:24).

And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.

A.     Fled from him

B.      Were sore afraid

1.       This are the very same words translated “greatly afraid” in I Samuel 17:11.

2.       They were vehemently afraid.  Wholly afraid.  Afraid through and through.

16.   What three things would the king give to the man who killed Goliath? (I Sam. 17:25)

And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up?  Surely to defy Israel is he come up:  and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.

A.     Enrich with great riches

B.      Give him his daughter

C.     Make his father’s house free in Israel

17.   What do the words, “make his father’s house free in Israel” mean? (I Sam. 17:25)

A.     In I Samuel 8:11-17, it was predicted that many burdens would be laid upon the people of Israel when their king came into power.  It may mean that the family would be free from all of these burdens.

B.      Others have suggested that it could simply mean that the person’s house would be free from paying taxes to the government

18.   What two questions did David ask when he was told of the king’s proposition? (I Sam. 17:26)

And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel?  For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

A.     What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine?

B.      For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

C.     NOTE:  David refers to God as “the living God.”  This is not the first time these words describe God (See Deut. 5:26; Josh. 3:10).  It is used in contrast to the dead idols of the Philistines.

19.   Define:  reproach (I Sam. 17:26)

A.     Strong (2781):  contumely, disgrace, the pudenda

B.      BDB:  reproach, scorn, …(resting upon condition of shame, reproach)

20.   T – F    The people affirmed again to David what the king would do for the one who killed

Goliath. (I Sam. 17:27

And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

A.     True

21.   Which brother’s anger was kindled against David? (I Sam. 17:28)

And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David…

A.     Eliab

22.   T – F    Eliab tried to indicate that David was forsaking his responsibilities at home. (I Sam.

17:28).

…and he said, Why camest thou down hither?  And with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness?

A.     True

23.   What two things did Eliab say that he knew about David? (I Sam. 17:28)

…I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou at once came down that thou mightest see the battle.

A.     His pride

B.      The naughtiness of his heart

C.     LESSON:

1.       Eliab should have been one of the men to take the field of battle against Goliath.  He had bowed in fear, however.  When his brother demonstrated courage, he tried to shame him from doing the right thing.

2.       Our family can often be the ones who are the most critical of our doing the will of God.

24.   Define:  naughtiness (I Sam. 17:28)

A.     Strong (7455):  badness (as marring)

B.      BDB:  badness, evil, bad quality

25.   What two questions did David use in response to Eliab? (I Sam. 17:29)

And David said, What have I now done?  Is there not a cause?

A.     What have I now done?

B.      Is there not a cause?  (NOTE:  Some say this should be translated:  “Have I not spoken by a word”).

C.     LESSON:  When a cause presents itself, we need to recognize and take it up as did David.

26.   T – F    David continued to show an interest in the reward to be given the man who prevailed

over Goliath. (I Sam. 17:30)

And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner:  and the people answered him again after the same manner.

A.     True

B.      LESSON:

1.       This is the third time David has heard about the reward to the victor.  He was told about it, then inquired about it two more times.  One has said that David’s desire to fight Goliath involved more than just faith and courage.

2.       There is nothing wrong with rewards for courageous behavior.  God is the one who is the ultimate Rewarder.  Rewards motivate individuals to do the right things.

27.   Who told Saul about David and his interest in Goliath? (I Sam. 17:31)

And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul…

A.     We are not told exactly who is what that revealed the information to Saul.

B.      It was one of the men to whom David spoke.  It could have just been one who heard David.

28.   T – F    Saul refused to call for David. (I Sam. 17:31)

…and he sent for him.

A.     False.  He immediately called for David.

29.   “And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine” (I Sam. 17:32).

A.     David speaks with boldness and confidence.

B.      He stood in direct contrast to the rest of the army of Israel, including their commander.

30.   Define:  fail (I Sam. 17:32)

A.     Strong (5307):  to fall

B.      BDB:  to fall, be cast down, fall away, waste away, be inferior to

C.     LESSON:  The enemy wants us to believe that we are inferior to him.  He wants us to fall to the ground instead of making forward progress.  He wants our heart to waste away instead of “taking heart” and showing great courage.
