MICHAL SAVES DAVID FROM SAUL

I Samuel 19:11-24

Victor M. Eskew

1.      Outline:

i.                    MESSENGERS SENT TO DAVID’S HOUSE (I Sam. 19:11a)

ii.                  MICHAL ENABLE’S DAVID’S ESCAPE (I Sam. 19:11b-13)

iii.                MONARCH DISCOVERS DAVID’S DEPARTURE (I Sam. 19:14-17)

iv.                MISCHIEF REPORTED TO SAMUEL (I Sam. 19:18)

v.                  MESSENGERS PROPHESY IN NAIOTH (I Sam. 19:19-21)

vi.                MAJESTY PROPHESIES IN NAIOTH (I Sam. 19:22-24)

2.      Who did Saul send to David’s house? (I Sam. 19:11)

Saul also sent messengers unto David’s house…

A.    Messengers

3.      For what purpose were they sent? (I Sam. 19:11)

…to watch him, and to slay him in the morning…

A.    They were to watch him.  He was not supposed to be able to escape.

B.      They were to slay him in the morning.  They would wait until the sunrise so they would not harm Saul’s daughter, Michal.

4.      Who warned David to flee that very night? (I Sam. 19:11)

…and Michal David’s wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life tonight, tomorrow thou shalt be slain.

A.    Michal.

B.      How she knew about the attack, we are not told.  Most likely the messengers were told to inform her so she would not be harmed when they overtook David the next morning.

5.      How did Michal help David escape? (I Sam. 19:12)

Michal let David down through a window:  and he went, and fled, and escaped.

A.    She let David down through a window.

B.      One would think that the messengers would have surrounded the house and would have seen what was happening.  It could have been that the messengers fell asleep on their watch.

C.     The Jews believed that it was during the time or immediately following that David wrote Psalm 59.  (See the title)

To the chief Musician, Al0tasechith, Michtam of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him.

6.      What did Michal lay in David’s bed? (I Sam. 19:13)

And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed…

A.    She laid in image in the bed.

B.      This action leads us to some questions.

1.      Why would Saul’s daughter possess an image?  (See Gen. 31:19)

2.      Whose image was this?

3.      Apparently, Saul had not done a very good job in rearing his children to submit the true God.

7.      What did Michal use as a hair piece upon the idol? (I Sam. 19:13)

…and put a pillow of goats’ hair for his bolster…

A.    Goat’s hair

8.      Define:  bolster (I Sam. 19:13)

A.    Strong (4763):  headpiece

B.      BDB:  a place at the head, head place

9.      T – F    She covered the image with a cloth (I Sam. 19:13)

…and cover it with a cloth.

A.    True

10.  When the messengers came to take David, what did Michal tell them? (I Sam. 19:14)

And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick.

A.    She told them David was sick.

11.  When this was reported to Saul, how did he respond? (I Sam. 19:15)

And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him.

A.    He wanted David brought to him in bed so he could kill him himself.

B.      It seems that Saul believed David to be vulnerable.  In his heart, he really wanted to be the one to slay David.

12.  What did the messengers find in the bed? (I Sam. 19:16)

And when the messengers were come in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goats’ hair for his bolster.

A.    They found the image and the hairpiece of goats’ hair.

13.  “And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped?” (I Sam. 19:17)

A.    This shows the predicament that Michal was under as well.

1.      Her father was Saul and he was the king.

2.      She deeply loved David.

14.  Why did Michal say she helped David to escape? (I Sam. 19:17)

And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?

A.    She said that David had threatened to kill her if she did not let him go.

B.      The threat of death was reason enough to do as David had said.  It was an excuse that even Saul himself could accept.  He did not desire the death of his daughter.

15.  To whom did David flee? (I Sam. 19:18)

So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel…

A.    He came to Samuel the prophet of God.

B.      One noted that when David fled to Samuel, he was running to God.

16.  To what city did he flee? (I Sam. 19:18)

…to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him.

A.    Ramah

Image result for Ramah of the bible

17.  After David told Samuel all Saul had done, where did they go? (I Sam. 19:18)

…And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.

A.    Naioth:  the word means “dwellings”

http://www.calvaryfullerton.org/Bstudy/09%201Sa/2002/091Sa19-21_files/image002.jpg

B.      It appears that Samuel established a school of the prophets in this location.

18.  T – F    Saul learned that David was in Naioth. (I Sam. 19:19)

And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is a Naioth in Ramah.

A.    True

B.      LESSON:  There are always individuals who are seeking news that they can report to the higher authorities.  Usually, they believe that this will put them in the good graces of the ruler, or, enable them to accumulate some wealth.

19.  Who did Saul send to take David? (I Sam. 19:20)

And Saul sent messengers to take David…

A.    Messengers

B.      Saul’s persistence continues.

1.      His anger and envy will not let him cease trying to kill David.

2.      Question:  What is your view of Saul’s anger and persistent activity?

20.  What did the messengers see when they arrived? (I Sam. 19:20)

…and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them…

A.    They saw the prophets prophesying

B.      They saw Samuel standing as appointed over them.

21.  T – F    The messengers that Saul sent to take David prophesied (I Sam. 19:20)

…the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.

A.    True

B.      This event may have struck fear into the hearts of the messengers.  Therefore, they left off from taking David.

22.  How many times did this happen? (I Sam. 19:21)

And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise, and Saul sent messengers the third time, and they prophesied also.

A.    Three times

23.  T – F    Saul then sent Jonathan to get David (I Sam. 19:22)

Then went he also to Ramah…

A.    False.  Saul went himself in search of David

24.  Where did Saul go in search of Samuel and David? (I Sam. 19:22)

…to Ramah…

A.    Ramah

B.      This is interesting because it has been reported to Saul that David was in Naioth.

C.     Perhaps after sending messengers to the city three times, he thought that David and Samuel may have returned to Samuel’s home in Ramah.

25.  Where did Saul ask this question:  “Where are Samuel and David?” (I Sam. 19:22)

…and came to a great well that is in Sechu…

A.    A great well in Sechu

B.      Sechu:

1.      Strong (7906):  surmount, an observatory

2.      BDB:  watch-tower

26.  T – F    Saul was told the wrong location. (I Sam. 19:22)

…and he asked, and said, Where are Samuel and David?  And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in Ramah.

A.    False

27.  What came upon Saul as he came near Naioth in Ramah? (I Sam. 19:23)

And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah:  and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

A.    The Spirit of God

B.      Saul had experienced this before (See I Sam. 10:10-12).

28.  What unusual act did Saul perform while he prophesied before Samuel? (I Sam. 19:24)

And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner and lay down naked…

A.    He stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel and laid down naked

B.      Naked does not mean completely nude in all instances.

1.      He would have removed his armor.

2.      He would have removed his royal garments.

3.      He would have worn his tunic and undergarments before the prophet.

29.  How long did he engage in this behavior? (I Sam. 19:24)

…all that day and all that night.

A.    All day and night

B.      Again, this led to the divine protection of David from any harm the king desired to bring upon David.

30.  What was a common statement made about Saul because of this? (I Sam. 19:24)

…Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?

A.    Is Saul also among the prophets?  This is the second time this has been said of Saul (See I Sam. 10:12).

B.      K&D:  “From this the proverb arose, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” - a proverb which was used to express astonishment at the appearance of any man in a sphere of life which had hitherto been altogether strange to him” (e-sword)
