JAMES 2:19
Victor M. Eskew
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe and tremble.
1. Believest
A. Strong (4100): to have faith (in, upon, or with respect to, a person or thing)
B. Thayer: to think to be true, to be persuaded, to credit, to place confidence in
C. Vine: to believe, also to be persuaded of, and hence to place confidence in, to trust, signifies, in this sense of the word, reliance upon, not mere credence
2. One
A. Strong (1520): one
B. Thayer: one
C. Vine: the first cardinal number…one in contrast to many
3. God
A. Strong (2316): deity…especially the supreme Deity
B. Thayer: the Godhead, the trinity…spoken of the only and true God
C. Vine: denotes the one true God
4. Well
A. Strong (2573): well
B. Thayer: beautifully, finely, excellently, well, rightly…well, truly, excellently, nobly, commendably
C. Vine: finely…is used translated “well” indicating what is done rightly
5. Devils
A. Strong (1140): a daemonic being
B. Thayer: evil spirits or the messengers and ministers of the devils
C. Vine: a demon
6. Tremble
A. Strong (5425): to “bristle” or chill, that is, shudder (fear)
B. Thayer: to bristle, stiffen, stand up, to shudder, to be struck with extreme fear, to be horrified
C. Vine: to be rough, to bristle, then to shiver, shudder, tremble
