The Betrayal of David and Christ
by: Dalton Gilreath

The Old Testament is filled with many types and shadows of Christ. Most of them involve a comparison or two between certain individuals. For example, Jonah was a shadow of Christ as he spent three days in the belly of the great fish. However, there are some more elongated shadows that may not be as well known. A great example can be seen in the betrayal of David found in 2 Samuel 15. Absalom was seeking to take the life of his father, David. Sadly, Ahithophel, David’s trusted advisor, joined with Absalom by giving him counsel regarding David (2 Sam 15:12). During this betrayal David crossed the Brooke Kidron (23). Three verses later he prayed that God’s will would be done in his life. Furthermore, David then went up to the Mount of Olives and there he and his followers wept together. After a series of events, Ahithophel ended up hanging himself, and Absalom died leaving David to return peacefully to the throne.

This story of betrayal is one of incredible prophecy. It begins with our Lord on the Mount of Olives (Matt 26:30). He soon was betrayed by one of His own as well, Judas. While the betrayal was taking place He, too, crossed the Brook Kidron (John 18:1). When He arrived in the Garden of Gethsemane He prayed for God’s will to be done (Luke 22:42). Of course He was in deep agony as were those who followed Him (Luke 22:45). However, He then returned to the throne victorious and his betrayer hanged himself in shame (Matt 27:5). How wonderful the omniscient mind of God as seen in this comparison. There can be no doubt that only our true God could have known such things.
