YES, THAT’S THE BOOK FOR ME

Victor M. Eskew

Those who are familiar with Vacation Bible School songs or children’s songs know that the words that entitle this article come from the song, “The B-I-B-L-E.”  The writer of the song tells us that the Bible is his choice.  It should be the choice of all men.  Let’s look at some of the reasons the Bible should be the book for “me.”

First, the Bible is the book for me because it is the only book that comes from God.  The Holy Spirit searched out the mind of God (I Cor. 2:9-13).  The words that God wanted revealed to men from His mind were spoken by the Spirit to holy men of God (II Pet. 1:20-21).  These men eventually wrote these things down (Eph. 3:3; II Thess. 2:2).  All of the inspired writings have been collected.  They form the book we call the Bible.  Its value is far beyond gold and silver (Ps. 19:10; 119:72).  Yes, the Bible’s being from God makes the Bible the book for me.

Second, the Bible is a book for me because it enables me to be saved.  Jesus procured salvation on the cross of Calvary when He shed His precious blood.  The Bible tells man how to come in contact with the blood of Jesus.  It is the power of God unto salvation (Rom. 1:16-17).  The directions are simple.  Hearing the Word of God produces faith in the hearts of men (Rom. 10:17).  That faith leads man to die to his old way of living, that is, to repent of sins (Luke 13:3).  Man, then, makes the confession that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Matt. 10:32-33).  Following his confession, he is baptized into Christ for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16).  At that point, he is in Christ (Gal. 3:26-27).  He is a new creature (II Cor. 5:17).  No other book tells men how to be saved.  Yes, its message of salvation makes the Bible the book for me.

Third, the Bible is the book for me because it directs my paths in this life and ultimately leads me to heaven.       The psalmist declared:  “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Ps. 119:105).  The Word of God can lead us in a perfect path in all areas of life in this world.  And, when this life is over, it will lead us to a home in heaven.  Paul told the Ephesians elders:  “And now brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among them that are sanctified” (Acts 20:32).  Yes, the Bible’s flawless path makes it the book for me.

“The B-I-B-L-E.  Yes, that’s the book for me.  I stand alone on the Word of God.  The B-I-B-L-E.”
