JAMES 2:5

1.    Hearken

A.   Strong (191):  to hear

B.    Thayer:  to hear, consider what has been said, to understand, perceive the sense of what is said, to comprehend

C.   Vine:  to hear

 

2.    Beloved

A.   Strong (27):  beloved  :- (dearly, well) beloved, dear

B.    Thayer:  beloved, esteemed, dear, favourite, worthy of love

C.   Vine:  to love…of believers one of another

 

3.    Brethren

A.   Strong (80):  a brother (literally or figuratively)

B.    Thayer:  a brother, a fellow believer, united to another by the bond of affection, brother in Christ

C.   Vine:  brother or near kinsman, all believers

 

4.    Chosen

A.   Strong (1586):  to select  :- make choice, choose (out), chosen

B.    Thayer:  to pick out, choose, to pick or choose out for one’s self…of God the Father choosing Christians, as those whom set apart from the irreligious multitude as dear unto himself, and whom he has rendered through faith in Christ, citizens in the Messianic kingdom:  (James 2:5) so that the ground of the choice lies in Christ and his merits only

C.   Vine:  to pick out,…to chose for oneself

 

5.    Poor

A.   Strong (4434):  a beggar, that is pauper  :- beggar (-ly), poor

B.    Thayer:  reduced to beggary, destitute of wealth, influence, position, honor, helpless, poor, needy, lacking in anything

C.   Vine:  poor

 

6.    World

A.   Strong (2889):  orderly arrangement, that is decoration; by implication the world

B.    Thayer:  an apt and harmonious arrangement, the world, the universe

C.   Vine:  primarily, order, arrangement, ornament, adornment, the earth, the universe, the earth in contrast with Heaven

 

7.   Rich

A.   Strong (4145):  wealthy, figuratively abounding with

B.    Thayer:  wealthy, abounding in material wealth

C.   Vine:  rich, wealthy

 

 

 

8.   Faith

A.   Strong (4102):  persuasion…moral conviction (of religious truth…) especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly constancy in such profession

B.    Thayer:  conviction of truth of anything; belief; in the NT of a conviction or belief respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, generally with the included idea of trust and holy fervor born of faith and joined with it

C.   Vine:  signifying believing, trusting, relying

 

9.   Heirs

A.   Strong (2818):  in its original sense of partitioning, that is, getting by appointment; a sharer by lot, that is, an inheritor

B.    Thayer:  one who receives by lot, an heir…in Messianic usage, one who receives his allotted portion by right of sonship

C.   Vine:  lit. denotes one who obtains a lot or portion…especially of an inheritance…believers, inasmuch as they share in the new order of things to be ushered in at the return of Christ

 

10. Kingdom

A.   Strong (932):  a realm

B.    Thayer:  a kingdom, the territory subject to the rule of a king

C.   Vine:  then by metonymy, a concrete noun, denoting the territory or people over whom a king rules

 

11.  Promised

A.   Strong (1861):  to announce upon…to engage to do something, to assert something respectively oneself

B.    Thayer:  to announce that one is about to do or furnish something, to promise (of one’s own accord) to engage voluntarily

C.   Vine:  to announce, proclaim

 

12. Love

A.   Strong (25):  to love

B.    Thayer:  of persons, to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly

C.   Vine:  Christian love has God for its primary object, and expresses itself first of all in implicit obedience to His commandments
