JAMES 2:19

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well:  the devils also believe and tremble.

 

1.    Believest

A.   Strong (4100):  to have faith (in, upon, or with respect to, a person or thing)

B.    Thayer:  to think to be true, to be persuaded, to credit, to place confidence in

C.   Vine:  to believe, also to be persuaded of, and hence to place confidence in, to trust, signifies, in this sense of the word, reliance upon, not mere credence

 

2.    One

A.   Strong (1520):  one

B.    Thayer:  one

C.   Vine:  the first cardinal number…one in contrast to many

 

3.    God

A.   Strong (2316):  deity…especially the supreme Deity

B.    Thayer:  the Godhead, the trinity…spoken of the only and true God

C.   Vine:  denotes the one true God

 

4.    Well

A.   Strong (2573):  well

B.    Thayer:  beautifully, finely, excellently, well, rightly…well, truly, excellently, nobly, commendably

C.   Vine:  finely…is used translated “well” indicating what is done rightly

 

5.    Devils

A.   Strong (1140):  a daemonic being

B.    Thayer:  evil spirits or the messengers and ministers of the devils

C.   Vine:  a demon

 

6.    Tremble

A.   Strong (5425):  to “bristle” or chill, that is, shudder (fear)

B.    Thayer:  to bristle, stiffen, stand up, to shudder, to be struck with extreme fear, to be horrified

C.   Vine:  to be rough, to bristle, then to shiver, shudder, tremble
