Jesus
Paid It All
by:
Dalton Gilreath
I. Introduction
A. While hanging on the cross Jesus shouted up to God in a loud voice (Matt 27:46)
i. The earth had just been dark for 3 hours and now the sun let out its light again
ii. Christ shouted, “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
1. Literally, “God why have you left me down and out?”
2. Jesus said this repeatedly has if He spoke through a mega phone
B. Consider what Jesus paid for us on the cross and what He owe Him in return
II. The Illustration (Hebrews 9:1-10)
A. The Hebrew writer begins by directing us to a place
i. In particular, he focuses upon the most holy place of the tabernacle
ii. He reminds us of the works of the high priest on the day of atonement each year
B. Next he references a person, the high priest
C. He continues by discussing the process taken by the high priest (7)
D. Finally, he mentions the picture, or “figure”, of how this all represented Christ who would become our High priest (8-10)
III. The Comparison (Hebrews 9:11-15)
A. The Hebrew writer connects his discussion regarding the high priest with Christ
i. Christ entered into Heaven (11:24)
ii. Christ was the person who shed His blood
iii. Christ went through the process of offering blood for our sins
B. For further comparison we can go to Hebrews 5:1-10
i. Connection (1)
1. Notice the high priest was taken from among men
2. He was someone the people could connect to
ii. Compassion (2)
1. The high priest had compassion on the people
2. Being a man he knew what it was like to be tempted by sin
iii. Charge (3)
1. His charge was to offer blood on behalf of the people
2. He was to serve God for them so that they could serve God
iv. Calling (4)
1. The high priest did not purchase his position nor did he inherit it
2. He was called by God just as Aaron had been
v. Now, the next six verses show how Christ embodied these same four characteristics
1. We connect with Christ because He became a man (5-6)
2. He has compassion on us because He experienced humanity (7-8)
3. He had a charge to seek and save the lost (9)
4. He, too, was called by God
IV. Application (Hebrews 9:16-28)
A. I owe Jesus the remission of my sins (16-22)
i. It isn’t my good deeds that save me
ii. It isn’t any step of salvation that saves me
iii. The blood of Jesus is what does the saving
B. I owe Jesus intercession (23-24)
i. Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God
ii. He gets up and stands before God, face to face, and calls my name
iii. This is the picture of intercession for my sin
C. I owe Jesus my salvation (25-28)
i. Notice Jesus will appear apart from sin this time
ii. Why? Because He bore my sins on the cross (1 Pet 2:24)
D. Now we know what Jesus asked the question, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”
i. I am ashamed to say the answer is “me”
ii. And you…
